One man and his Guitar

Following on from an earlier post, Here are a few more shots from my shoot with Barry in Adare a few weeks ago. There are only so many photos I can take of one man and his guitar, so you might find these a little repetitive by the time you get to the end. I’m always looking for feedback, so do let me know which ones are your favourite/least favourite and why!

Having just left Ireland, Barry has recently started blogging about life in Holland – be sure to check it out: http://twentethings.wordpress.com/

50@50 – 5: The Musical Weatherman

This chap can only be described as a character. I’ve known him for a long time now. He recently got in touch and asked me if I would mind taking a few shots for him playing his guitar “for a laugh, like”. For something that was only supposed to be for a laugh, I have to say there was a lot of undirected (natural) shaping going on!! 🙂 Although I do reckon he’d make a great model – if only for his ability to follow direction (oh, and his rugged good looks).

It was a miserable bloody day – stormy is the only way to describe it. We ended up spending a few hours out in the rain around Adare getting the shots, I have to say, it was nothing short of hilarious. I’ll be posting a few non-50mm photos from this set over the next few weeks.

Alas, I won’t see the lad for a while now as he is moving abroad. Fitz, best of luck with your new career working as a Musical Weatherman on Dutch national TV!! 😛

The Greatest View

The Greatest View

Taken from the top of the cable car at Brevent (Alt. 2525m) around 1500m above Chamonix below. I love this place – in all the years our family has been coming here, I’ve never tired of it. This peak (Brevent) is usually fairly peaceful as there are only two black runs back down to Plan Praz (525m below), so it doesn’t have the same amount of traffic as the lower slopes.

We hope to get back to Chamonix next year – although with the impending doom, I mean wedding (sorry Síofra!!!), it may not happen.

Dug out the old guitars last night. I’ve forgotten absolutely everything I used to know – except for the intros to “Under the Bridge” by the Chilli’s and “Creep” by Radiohead. One thing I haven’t been able to forget is my complete lack of Rythm – I was hoping this would improve with age.

The Strat (Cream),  came all the way from the States back when I was seventeen. Beautiful guitar – it has a nice thin neck, so it’s really easy to wrap your fingers around it.

The Tele (Left), is actually a replica I built for my leaving cert Construction Studies project back in 1998. The body is so thick, you have to sit down while playing it. As a result notes just ring out forever when you pluck the strings. There isn’t a strap strong enough or a human back tough enough to play it while standing up!

Must say I prefer this shot. Was shooting at ISO3200 and my 30D doesn’t handle it well – there is so much noise in some of the photos, it’s hard to see what I was trying to get a shot of! That said, I think the noise adds to this shot a little. Any processing recommendations or suggestions from the people that shoot gigs regularly?

If you have some time on your hands, try to get out and see the Million Dollar Swing Band – it’ll be worth the trip!

Liam with The Million Dollar Swing Band at Aubars in Limerick. My first attempt at gig photography – the light was terrible, but I managed to get one or two keepers. The gig itself was really enjoyable.

The Caterpillar Girl

Lyrics:

flicka flicka flicka
here you are
cata cata cata
caterpillar girl
flowing in
and filling up my hopeless heart
oh never never go
dust my lemon lies
with powder pink and sweet
the day i stop
is the day you change
and fly away from me

you flicker
and you’re beautiful
you glow inside my head
you hold me hypnotized
i’m mesmerized

your flames
the flames that kiss me dead
oh dust my lemon lies
with powder pink and sweet
the day i stop
is the day you change
and fly away from me

flicka flicka flicka
here you are
cata cata cata
caterpillar girl
flowing in
and filling up my hopeless heart
oh never never go
dust my lemon lies
with powder pink and sweet
the day i stop
is the day you change
and fly away
away from me

cata cata cata

cata cata cata
caterpillar girl
cata cata cata
caterpillar girl
cata cata cata
cata cata cata

The Most of the Moon

The Most of the Moon

Jan 14.

Took this in Adare last night – the moon was huge. I decided I was going to stay there until I got a decent shot of the moon. And after a bit of playing around, I got a series of colour and monochrome photos – but this monochrome photo is my favourite. Make sure you view the largest possible copy of this one – you can see craters in pretty good detail. I haven’t been able to get “The whole of the moon” by The Waterboys out of my head since. Maybe I should change this to a photo and a song a day.
